Light and Bright in South Yarra

Paul and Pam Wilson approached Markel Design to transform their dated 20-year-old bathrooms into light-filled, modern spaces. The original ensuite and main bathroom were builder-grade, dark, and lacking both style and storage. The couple wanted to enhance the practicality, brightness, and overall aesthetic of these key areas in their South Yarra apartment.

Design & Style

The design brief was clear—create a clean, minimalist, and contemporary space with a sense of openness and light. We delivered this through:

Infinity “Terrazzo White Matte” porcelain benchtops
Polytec Antico Oak Woodmatt cabinetry, offering warm timber tones
Wicklok Haze honed finish grey tiles for a soft, modern backdrop
Matte black fixtures and fittings for striking contrast
A handleless cabinetry look, achieved via a discreet shadowline grip and push-to-open drawers

Each element was carefully selected to enhance light, flow, and functionality—resulting in timeless elegance.

Custom Features & Hero Elements

A custom-etched glass sliding door to the ensuite provides a stylish focal point while saving space
Custom vanities were tailored to optimise every inch of the available layout
Well-placed LED lighting adds ambience and function, especially in areas previously dark and under-lit

Craftsmanship & Execution

Renovating in a multi-storey apartment comes with challenges—restricted access, noise limits, and structural limitations. The Markel team navigated every hurdle, from rerouting hidden air-conditioning drains to reworking cabinetry around a main switchboard and thin walls that precluded shower niches.

Despite the complexity, the process was seamless. We maintained close client communication and ensured every decision—from fittings to finishes—aligned with the vision.

We also incorporated matte black grab rails and heated towel rails in both bathrooms—future-proofing the space while maintaining design integrity.
