“I’d love an island in my new kitchen.”

Not an unusual request when we design a new kitchen, and when planned correctly, an island can provide many benefits—both practically and aesthetically.

A few things to consider before embarking on the design:

  • Positioning the island – Will there be sufficient room around it, or will it overcrowd the available space?

  • In a small space, perhaps consider a movable island.

  • Is there enough space to have an island of ample proportions that looks appropriate in the kitchen area?

  • What will be the main purpose(s) it will serve? Food preparation, entertaining as a buffet bar, casual meals, or even to separate the working kitchen area from the living area?

  • If the island is to be used for casual meals, how many seats are required, and how should they be positioned?

  • For food preparation, a dedicated extra sink can be a clever inclusion.

  • If a sink is required, are we able to provide waste and water to it?

  • Avoid unsightly joins in a stone benchtop by keeping the island dimensions within a standard slab size—most slabs are limited to about 3200mm in length.

  • Cooktops in an island bench can be a hazard—plus, island rangehoods tend to be less efficient and effective.

  • The island can certainly be the headline act in the new kitchen. Waterfall ends, curved ends, and fluted back panels are very on-trend but can add considerable expense.

At Markel Design, we would love to help you end up with an island that provides all the benefits—and none of the pitfalls. Give us a call to find out how.
