This is one of the hardest questions to answer, as it depends on the size of the kitchen, the materials and finishes chosen, the level of sophistication, the quality of the appliances, and the trades required to complete the project.

At Markel Design, we provide a realistic estimate for a workable budget that covers all aspects of the project—before you engage us to do the job—so there are no nasty surprises!

Don’t forget to consider additional costs such as flooring, painting, window treatments, or even temporary accommodation if moving out during the renovation is necessary.

The following estimates are based on a medium-sized kitchen:

Budget Renovation – $18,000 to $36,000

This would generally involve a makeover of an existing kitchen, which might include a new benchtop, replacement of a few appliances, or using DIY flat-pack cabinets. At this price point, you shouldn’t expect too many drawers or internal fittings that optimise storage and usability. Standardised cabinet sizes often don’t maximise available space.

Qualified trades are still required—particularly for electrical and plumbing connections. In fact, trades costs may not differ significantly from those of a higher-quality kitchen if the work is done properly.

You’ll likely find yourself acting as the project manager at this level of renovation—not a role for the faint-hearted!

Mid-Range Renovation – $36,000 to $66,000

This budget allows for a custom-designed kitchen with quality benchtops in Dekton, natural granite, or porcelain. Door finishes may include high-quality laminates such as Polytec Ravine, Legato, or Venette. At the higher end of this range, you might opt for a modern 2pac polyurethane finish, offering an infinite range of colour choices.

Expect features like full-extension, steel-sided drawers, space-saving fittings, task lighting, and a quality range of appliances. Splashbacks may be porcelain, stone, or a standout feature tile.

In terms of return on investment, this level of renovation is more likely to add long-term value to your home.

High-End Renovation – $66,000+

For those wanting the absolute best, the sky’s the limit. Building on the mid-range features, you can expect top-tier finishes such as detailed 2pac polyurethane cabinetry, porcelain fronts, and timber or timber veneers. Benchtops might include Dekton, granite, imported marble, or quartzite.

You can also incorporate premium hardware—solid brass handles, specialty metal finishes, and more.

Elite appliances are often specified, such as Sub-Zero, Wolf, V-Zug, Pitt Cooking, Liebherr, and Gaggenau. Expect full-surface induction cooktops, large-format ovens, and integrated fridges, freezers, and dishwashers that blend seamlessly into the design.

Highly detailed cabinetry will include all the bells and whistles: extensive pull-outs, lift-up mechanisms, lighting, a butler’s pantry, Servo-Drive systems, and the finest European accessories throughout.

For an executive residence, this level of renovation offers undeniable “wow” factor—and is sure to impress.
